Glucose tolerance and insulin resistance after danazol treatment

Abstract
Summary Blood glucose and serum insulin concentrations were measured during an oral glucose tolerance test in nine non-diabetic women before and 6 weeks alter starting treatment with danazol for pelvic endometriosis. Danazol induced a mild deterioration in glucose tolerance and a marked increase in the insulin response to glucose loading. Sex hormone binding globulin concentrations were reduced by 80 per cent but there was no change in total testosterone and oestradiol concentrations. These data confirm that danazol increases insulin resistance in non-diabetic women, probably as a result of its androgenic properties. Danazol treatment should probably be avoided in women with impaired glucose tolerance.
