Abstract
While iodine has been found in lower prechordates, no identifiable physiologic influence of the element is recognized until the level of amphibians. Organified iodine is required for the metamorphosis of the tadpole to the adult frog. Iodinated compounds are essential to growth and development of most vertebrates, and iodine levels temper these metabolic changes. Keywords
