Mean Red Cell Life of Rats Exposed to Reduced Barometric Pressure

Abstract
The life span of red blood cells produced by rats acclimatized to high altitudes is normal. Of the red cells produced during the initial phase of rapid erythropoiesis resulting from exposure of rats to simulated high altitude conditions, at least some have a shorter than normal life span. Though not conclusive, the evidence presented does not support the concept that increased destruction of red cells occurs on returning an altitude-acclimatized animal to sea level.
