EFFECT OF PURIFIED PITUITARY PREPARATIONS ON URINE NITROGEN IN THE RAT

Abstract
The action of purified beef ant. pituitary hormone preps. on urine nitrogen was studied in normal "plateaued" [female] rats. Un-fractionated pituitary extracts and purified pituitary growth hormone preparations caused a marked decrease in urine nitrogen. Purified pituitary thyrotrophic hormone preps. caused a significant but smaller reduction in urine N. This action is probably not mediated by the thyroid gland. Purified pituitary lactogenic hormone preps. had an even smaller effect on N retention, statistically not significant, although consistently larger than that obtained with purified pituitary follicle stimulating and interstitial cell stimulating hormone preps., thyroxin, adrenal cortex extract and protamine zinc insulin, all of which hormones, at the dose levels tested, were without effect on urinary N excretion.
