Abstract
The dispersion curves of the surface modes of a monolayer of xenon adsorbed on a single crystal of graphite have been measured by helium-atom scattering. A strong hybridization-induced splitting is observed between the localized adsorbate mode and the substrate Rayleigh mode, indicating a stronger adsorbate-substrate interaction than that for the case of rare gases on metals. Keywords
