Correlation Range and Compressibility of Xenon near the Critical Point

Abstract
From the magnitude and angular dependence of the intensity of light scattered from xenon near its critical point we have measured the Ornstein-Zernike long-range correlation length ξ and the reduced compressibility (ρμ)T. We find ξ=(3.0±0.10)ε0.58±0.05 Å and (ρμ)T=(1.43±0.06)×109ε1.21±0.03 g2/erg cm3 along the critical isochore, and (ρμ)T=(0.346±0.01)×109ε1.21±0.02 g2/erg cm3 along the coexistence curve, with ε|TTc|Tc. Using our results, we have compared the predictions of the Kawasaki-Kadanoff-Swift mode-mode coupling theories with measurements of the thermal diffusivity in xenon.
