Abstract
A two beam optical heterodyne method is described which yields high heterodyne mixing efficiency without critical angular alignment. The reference beam is obtained by scattering part of the primary beam from a thin layer of fixed scatterers. The sensitivity to low light levels is shown to increase by a factor of 4 over the homodyne method when the heterodyning process is nearly ideal. Keywords
