Abstract
A new method is described which depends on liberating trimethylamine from the thiol in alkaline solution and its determination as the picrate by spectrophotometry. Values are given and discussed for the concentration ranges of ergothioneine found in human blood, plasma and packed cells. Ergothioneine does not diffuse either out of or into human blood cells. Evidence is given for the existence in blood of "protein-bound" ergothioneine. Keywords
