Abstract
To be a reality, mental health care in the community requires a range of appropriate services, and practices within them. This article examines one such service, a rehabilitation and community support unit, looking at the ways in which it provides community care. Questions are raised about the risks of creating new forms of institutionalism, in long term use of services, in an insufficient diversity of services and in the concentration of people with mental health problems in neighbourhoods. The way in which these issues have been addressed in the development of one service are examined, and the limits of this type of service are noted. Keywords
