The Fermi contact contribution to electron coupled nuclear spin-spin interactions

Abstract
In a perturbation-variation calculation of the contact contribution to indirect spin-spin coupling, the whole second-order energy diverges if the contact operator is used in the usual form. Thus one calculates the cross term and consequently there is only a stationary condition. To obtain information about the efficiency of a test-function, its convergence has to be considered. The convergence of test-functions composed of a singular part and a power expansion has been examined for a simple model. Convergence appears to have nearly been obtained for the coupling constant although the first-order perturbation equation is not solved exactly.
