Endocarditis due to a Lanthanic, Unclassified Gram-Negative Bacterium (Group IV d)

Abstract
The 1st report of an unclassified Gram-negative bacterium (Group IV d) causing endocarditis and death in a patient is presented. Group IV d bacteria are extremely refractory to all antibiotics, and the possibility of these organisms emerging as nosocomiants must be considered. The desirability of bacteriologically delimiting this heterogeneous group of organisms by use of Hugh-Leifson carbohydrates is discussed.
