Use of Serum and the Routine and Experimental Laboratory Findings in the 1934 Poliomyelitis Epidemic

Abstract
Convalescent pooled serum and normal pooled serum were alike ineffective as a prophylactic measure in a small group. Only 35% of cases gave spinal fluid white cell counts of 10 or more and 56% of this group gave a positive colloidal benzoin test. Monkey inoculation with virus from 11 autopsies was successful in 5 instances. This California virus showed antigenic relation to the M. V. strain since monkeys recovering from infection with it were resistant to inoculation with M. V. virus.
