Abstract
The design philosophy for the Next European Torus is to achieve the maximum flexibility possible within other constraints imposed by physics technology. The design consequences for the basic machine, in-vessel components, operation cycle, assembly and maintenance, auxiliary systems, and the overall layout are introduced. Keywords
