Abstract
The mobility of the red blood cell across an electrically charged field has been measured in patients with various diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. When the red blood cells of healthy persons are incubated with serum of patients with malignant disease the mobility of the cell is greatly reduced. The red cell mobility after incubation with serum of patients with malignancy was found to be 0.91 [plus or minus]6.5 [mu]/sec/volt/cm. The mobility of the red blood cell after incuation with serum of patients without malignant disease was found to be 1.26 [plus or minus]8.1 [mu]/sec/volt/cm. The difference is statistically significant. The test was successful in distinguishing between patients with malignant disease and patients with non-malignant disease of the gastrointestinal tract in all but 3 of 105 patients. Keywords
