Abstract
According to a theory by Whitworth, Paren and Glen (1976) the disorder of the protons in ice Ih presents an obstacle to the glide of dislocations on the (0001) planes which is so great that it is very difficult to understand how dislocations can move at the velocities observed experimentally. Their theory makes the usual assumption that dislocations glide between the most widely spaced pairs of planes (the shuffle set). It is now shown that if the dislocations move between the more closely spaced pairs of planes (the glide set) the predicted dislocation velocity is greatly increased. Keywords
