Abstract
Theoretical expressions for the conductivity tensors of semimetals are derived using the deformation potential approach and are compared with experimental values for zone-refined bismuth at 20.4°K in fields up to 7000 Oe. The agreement is reasonably satisfactory if one assumes only one light-hole band. The data appear to be quite inconsistent with the existence of an additional heavy-hole band, unless we assume an extremely small deformation potential for the heavy hole. Numerical values for the relaxation times and the deformation potential are derived from the experimental results. Keywords
