Isolation of Nonagglutinable Vibrios from an Enteritis Outbreak in Czechoslovakia

Abstract
A Vibrio strain that was not agglutinable by Ogawa and Inaba sera was isolated from 42 out of 56 persons participating in a meal. The same organism was cultured also from 2 cooks. The 56 participants had short-term diarrhea without sequels. The Vibrio was differentiated from Aeromonas hydrophila by its morphology and biochemical behavior and from Vibrio comma by its serological characteristics as well as some enzymatic reactions, which, however, were in accordance with those of the genus Vibrio. This was the 1st outbreak of gastroenteritis in Europe from which a non agglutinable vibrio was isolated since the beginning of this century.
