COMPARISON OF THE NUTRITIVE VALUE OF DEXTROSE AND CASEIN AND OF THE EFFECTS PRODUCED ON THEIR UTILIZATION BY THIAMINE

Abstract
Sixteen rats which had access to casein and water survived for an avg. of 33 days and 21 rats on dextrose and water for 37 days. On the 2 regimens the rate of wt. loss was almost exactly the same. When given access also to thiamine hydrochloride, 14 rats on casein and water survived 55 days and 12 rats on dextrose and water 73 days. Hence thiamine plays an important part in the utilization of protein as well as of carbohydrate. Except for emaciation and the appearance of constant cornification of the vaginal smears after 50 to 60 days on the diets the rats appeared to be in excellent shape.
