Abstract
Rats and hamsters exposed to atmospheres of powder or fume produced from aluminum showed a greater retention of aluminum in the latter exposure. Weights of wet lung, ash and aluminum oxide content of lungs were greater in the lungs of exposed rats than controls. Some subsequent reductions indicated clearance after fresh air. Initial response was proliferation of macrophages within alveolar spaces. Lipoid pneumonia followed. After long exposure to aluminum powder, rats showed focal deposits of hyalin material in alveolar walls. Large cystic spaces developed in some with acute pneumonia. Species difference but no evidence of fibrosis was shown in response to aluminum inhalation. Keywords
