Abstract
A system in temperature equilibrium is enclosed in a container and this container is set rotating. We show that the effective moment of inertia is the same as what one would compute in the usual way, for both classical and quantum statistical mechanics. This apparently trivial theorem has applications for the theories of superfluidity of liquid helium and of superconductivity of metals. Keywords
