Clinical studies of multiple sclerosis in Israel: Part II A comparison between European and Afro-Asian patients

Abstract
In view of the high prevalence of multiple sclerosis in temperate latitudes to the low prevalence in latitudes near the equator, a comparative study of multiple sclerosis in European and Afro-Asian patients in Israel is presented. No significant differences were discerned when comparison was made of presenting symptoms, course of illness, exacerbation rate and disability. Etiological factors such as light, temperature, diet and radiation are discussed. Environmental factors, genetic susceptibility and differences in attitude towards medical care are evaluated. It would appear, however, that the cultural, ethnic and geoclimatic variables, though of possible importance, exert little effect on clinical manifestations of multiple sclerosis in the 2 groups.
