Abstract
Cooper and Elliott have recently shown that the electric breakdown of KBr single crystals is initiated in the cathode region. An explanation was offered which depended on the accumulation of positive space charge arising from electron impact ionization. Experiments are described in the paper which show that an alternative explanation of cathode field enhancement by polarization due to the migration of positive ions is improbable. Keywords
