TITRATION AND PARTIAL CHARACTERIZATION OF A SOLUBLE HEMOLYSIN OF A GROUP D STREPTOCOCCUS

Abstract
Streptococcus zymogenes, isolated from dried skim milk, produces a nondialyzable, nonfilterable, oxygen stable hemolysin in a beef infusion peptone, yeast autolysate medium. The hemolysin is stimulated by deoxyribonucleic acid and sodium nucleate and requires Mn, Ca, K, phosphate or sulfate ions for activity. The hemolysin is stable for at least one week at 1-3[degree]C but is inactivated by shaking during culturing and is inhibited by shaking once it is formed. Culturing and titrating procedures are described in detail.
