Abstract
The output of semiconductor laser resonators containing saturable absorbers is calculated with use of a semiclassical model that takes into account radial variation of the laser mode and the gain. The results show that more absorption is required for bistability to exist compared to the plane-wave case, and that transverse effects must be included to predict the switching intensities accurately. Keywords
