Abstract
Using the granuloma pouch technique described by Selye, studies were made on the effect of topically applied hydrocortisone, Compound S and the combination of the two on the inflammatory reaction caused by croton oil irritation in white rats. Used separately, hydrocortisone inhibited the inflammation, while Compound S enhanced the same. Hydrocortisone, however, even in the presence of Compound S asserted its antiinflammatory action at a small dose level as judged by the amount of inflammatory exudate formed in the animals of the different groups. It is suggested that profound depression of cellular reactivity by hydrocortisone renders the tissues less capable of reaction to irritation even in the presence of a proinflammatory hormone. Keywords
