Abstract
The region is one of heavily forested mountain islands in a savannah or thorn sea. The area is divided into lowland, intermediate and highland zones on the basis of altitude, and these zones and the vegetation are used as the bases for distinguishing the various avian communities. These communities are: (1) lowland evergreen forest, (2) intermediate evergreen forest, (3) intermediate dry evergreen forest, (4) highland evergreen forest, (5) "Cedar" forest, (6) highland evergreen scrub. The first 4 communities have their bird life divided into 3 strata (tree-tops, mid-stratum, ground-stratum) and these subdivided again on the basis of the type of diet used. Other less important communities are considered, including some not related to vegetation.
