Abstract
A thermally radiating and absorbing plane ``piston problem'' is investigated. The zeroth-order approximation in a series expansion in the density ratio across the shock is carried out for both the similar and nonsimilar cases. Simple analytical results exhibit a clear picture of the radiation effects to a shock layer structure. Accuracy is demonstrated for certain similar cases through direct comparison with the exact numerical results. The method of approach established can be applied to the multi-dimensional steady radiating shock layer problems with minor modifications.
