The Iodinated Albuminlike Component of the Plasma of Thyrotoxic Patients

Abstract
An iodinated protein has been detected in the plasma of 20 consecutive patients with Graves' disease after the administration of therapeutic doses of I131. The component was found also in 5 of these patients who were given 500 μc test doses of I131, but the quantity was somewhat less in 4 of them than after therapeutic doses. A method was developed to obtain a preparation of the iodinated protein which was free of other I131-labeled components. When studied in a variety of ways, the component was closely similar to serum albumin and differed only in that, upon enzymatic hydrolysis, it yielded iodinated amino acids, predominantly monoiodotyrosine.
