Abstract
Sunburn cell (SC) formation induced by single or combined doses of monochromatic UV-A, UV-B and UV-C was studied quantitatively using mouse epidermal sheet preparations (NaBr split, H and E stain). Results were as follows: action spectra for SC formation showed that wavelengths < 300 nm were most effective; a significant number of SC was produced when a high dose of UV-A (360 nm) was administered, and it was estimated that .apprx. 600 times more UV-A energy was required to produce the same number of SC as was required with UV-B (300 nm); SC formation by UV-B and UV-C (260 nm) showed a logarithm-like dose-response relationship; time course studies showed that the maximum number of SC was attained at 18 h after UV-C irradiation, at 24 h after UV-B irradiation and at 30 h after UV-A irradiation; a high dose of UV-A significantly increased the number of SC induced by UV-B or UV-C when combined with them. This publication has 6 references indexed in Scilit:
