Abstract
Effect of thiocyanate was determined on the potential difference (PD), resistance, secretory rate and volume of the secreting chambered gastric segment preparation stimulated by histamine with Mecholyl (methocholine bromide or chloride). Mecholyl augments the histamine secretory rates. With either type of stimulation thiocyanate increases the resistance to the resting level. When histamine plus Mecholyl is used there is a marked decrease in PD during the decline of the secretory rate while with histamine alone there is relatively little decrease in PD. Following the complete inhibition of hydrogen ion secretion the PD returns to the resting level in both cases. The implication of these findings to a previously proposed theory of HC1 formation is discussed. Keywords
