Abstract
Electron emission from clean polycrystalline gold bombarded by (1 ÷ 16) keV H+, (2 ÷ 16) keV H0, (3 ÷ 16) keV H- and (1 ÷ 5) keV/a.m.u. H+2 and H+3 has been studied by measuring both total electron yields and electron emission statistics (ES). Comparing the ES for hydrogen atoms and molecular ions with those for protons shows different screening of the projectile protons by their accompanying electron(s). ES as well as total electron yields for molecular ions can consistently be synthetised by respectively convolution or addition of corresponding data for H0 and H+. For impact of H- it can be recognized that the weakly bound electron is detached on hitting the surface and thus acts independently of the remaining H0 projectile, in contrast to the screening action of electrons on H0, H+2 and H+3.Keywords
