Abstract
Virulent strains can be grown in a partially defined medium but are exacting compared with avirulent strains. The main differences are:- pH optimum 7.6-7.8, mechanical agitation inhibits instead of supporting growth, starch is necessary for growth but can be replaced by amylose and to a lesser extent by some other carbohydrates. Amino acid requirements as demonstrated by paper chromatograms, are greater and more exacting. Yeast extract or equivalents and sulfur sources are also necessary for growth. Keywords
