Treatment of Mumps Orchitis with ACTH and Cortisone

Abstract
THE most disabling and striking complication of mumps is orchitis, which has been reported as affecting 15 to 40 per cent1 , 2 of adult males in different epidemics. The pain appears to be related to acute distention of the testicle within the rigid tunica albuginea, and relief can be obtained by surgical incision of this capsule. Because cortisone and ACTH are well known for their anti-inflammatory action they have been tried by a number of investigators in the hope that they might be as effective as surgery. Most reports of adrenal-hormone treatment for mumps orchitis discuss a few personally treated cases. . . .
