Abstract
• Epididymo-orchitis occurs in about 18 to 35% of cases of mumps. Orally given cortisone was used to treat five patients with this orchitis; 300 mg. was administered for the first day, then at least 100 mg. a day for three days or more was used for maintenance, followed by the usual gradual withdrawal period. Significant symptomatic relief, evidenced by less pain and tenderness, occurred within 24 hours, but the duration of the infection and febrile response was apparently not shortened on the initially affected side. The subsequent contralateral orchitis, which occurred in three of the five cases, did appear milder and of shorter duration.
