Effect of Prednisolone and Triiodothyronine on Thyroid Function in Hyperthyroidism

Abstract
The effect on thyroid function of administering cortical steroids and triiodothyronine has been studied in cases of hyperthyroidism. After 7 days of prednisolone medication there was a significant depression of the uptake of radioactive iodine by the thyroid gland and a fall in the protein-bound iodine in serum. By supplying thyrotropin, a thyroid response could be elicited in the presence of a high level of adrenal steroids. No significant depression of the radioiodine uptake or of the level of protein-bound iodine was observed with the same methods when triiodothyronine was given.
