Abstract
IN a study of the role of antimicrobial agents in preventing complications during an epidemic of influenza Townsend1 defined a complication as a new sign or symptom of the respiratory tract and implied that such an occurrence might justify the use of antimicrobial agents in the patient's treatment program.By this definition, complications were reported as having developed in 12 per cent of the study group. On the other hand, some of the new signs and symptoms such as otitis media and bronchopneumonia defined as "complications" were found to be elements of the original illness.
