Abstract
A number of antihistamine compounds belonging to different chemical groups have been tested for antiserotonin potency in the isolated rat uterus preparation. Besides promethazine, which proved to be the most effective preparation, only the two piperidine derivatives, thenophenopiperidin and 4-N-benzylanilino-l-methylpiperi-din, showed an appreciable degree of antiserotonin activity, whereas 6 other well known antihistamines were much less effective. The relative antiserotonin potency parallels previous findings on inhibition of dextran-and egg white-edema in rats by antihistamines, confirming the assumption that serotonin is the chief mediator in the anaphylactoid reaction in rats. Keywords
