Effect of dissipation on quantum coherence

Abstract
The effect of dissipation on a macroscopic superposition of quantum states is studied with use of a Markovian master-equation approach. It is shown that a superposition of two states is reduced to a mixture at a rate proportional to the separation between the two states. This underlines the difficulty of observing a superposition of macroscopic quantum states in practice.Keywords
