Cystic Fibrosis of the Pancreas

Abstract
THE development of special types of glass that are selectively permeable to specific ions has permitted the construction of glass electrodes capable of measuring the concentration of certain monovalent cations with a high degree of accuracy. The sodium electrode1 has previously been applied to the measurement of sodium-ion concentration in solutions and in biologic systems.2 3 4 5 We were interested in the possibility of measuring sodium activity at the skin surface without the induction of sweating, with the thought that such a method might be useful for the rapid diagnosis of cystic fibrosis of the pancreas. Accordingly, one of us (P.S.) suggested . . .
