The Effect of Obesity on Plasma Triglycerides and Fasting Plasma IRI Levels. Significance of Insulinogenic Index and Glucose Tolerance

Abstract
The mechanisms causing hypertriglyceridemia, hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance remain unclear. It is well known that obesity plays an important role in causing the above abnormalities. The purpose of the investigation was to uncover the metabolic role of obesity in humans in causing hypertriglyceridemia and hyperinsulinemia by introducing the insulinogenic index as a metabolic parameter. The increase in TG levels, as well as increase in basal IRI [immunoreactive insulin] and IRI response to glucose, and not the relative body weight per se, are possibly a parameter of insulin insensitivity.
