Abstract
A review is given of the structure and function of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) with special reference to the situation during and after epileptic seizures including electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Based on the literature describing different models of epilepsy the development of the theories concerning the early observations of a BBB dysfunction in connection with seizure activity is given, and gross morphology, ultrastructural and dynamic findings are briefly reviewed. Keywords
