Abstract
A manometric method of evaluating germicides was developed, based on the fact that the rate of O2 uptake of multiplying bacteria is directly proportional to bacterial content when the organisms are grown under favorable conditions. The inhibition in the normal rate of increase of O2 uptake upon the addition of germicide (phenol, Na orthophenyl phenate, metaphen, HgCl2 and sulphanilamide) was found to be due to a corresponding inhibition in growth. The germicides in bacteriostatic cones, have no effect on metabolic rates, but inhibit cell multiplication. This publication has 5 references indexed in Scilit:
