METABOLIC STUDIES DURING PREGNANCY AND MENSTRUATION

Abstract
The BMR, and blood and urine chemistry were studied on a woman during a normal pregnancy. The increase in BMR, which was 25% at term, was adequately accounted for by the increase in surface area of fetus and mother during the course of the pregnancy. The heat production per square meter remained within normal limits. The N balance was positive throughout the pregnancy. There was a slight decrease in % N eliminated as urea and an increase in uric acid, amino acid, and ammonia N. Creatine elimination was somewhat increased and creatinine was increased during the 9th mo. The blood chemistry remained essentially normal. The BMR during the menstrual cycle showed a slight fall during the menstrual period and a subsequent rise to normal during the postmenstrual period.
