Abstract
All of the features of crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) and most characteristics of C4 photosynthesis are exhibited by stomatal guard cells. It is proposed that CAM and possibly also C4 photosynthesis result from the expression in photosynthetic cells of genetic information which is expressed only in guard cells of C3 plants. Keywords
