Abstract
Analysis of the patient load of the venereal disease clinics of the Manchester Regional Hospital Board area revealed a striking increase in the male to female ratio of early syphilis, from 1.6:1 in 1948 to 4.7:1 in 1960. The ratio in 1961 was 4.2:1. Laird points out that this increase may be due to 3 factors, increase in homosexual infection in males, infections of males overseas or local infection by prostitutes. That the last is probably of importance is indicated by his finding that in the past 5 years 27% of males with primary or secondary syphilis were considered to have acquired their infections by homosexual contacts. Keywords
