Abstract
We show that the hierarchy and mixing in fermion masses can originate from a simple assumption that all three generations of fermions have almost the same Yukawa couplings. We present a mechanism which naturally generates large mixing in the lepton sector while treating neutrinos in the same way as charged leptons and quarks. If embedded into grand unified theories the third generation Yukawa coupling unification is a generic feature. Surprisingly, the mass of the lightest neutrino in this approach is model independent in the leading order and is given as m_{top}^2/(3 M_{GUT}).
