Abstract
It is shown that P-wave medium polarization corrections to the second-order rescattering contribution to the S-wave isovector strength (b) in the pion-nucleus optical potential follow the trend of recent pionic atom fits. In particular, the net effect of medium polarization corrections is to increase the effective magnitude of b some 10% to 20%.
