Jahn-Teller Effect inEg5State ofFe2+in MgO: Observation of Tunneling Splitting and Test of the Vibronic Model for anE-State Jahn-Teller Ion

Abstract
Measurements of the optical absorption spectrum corresponding to the T2g5Eg5 transition of Fe2+ in MgO determine the principal parameters characterizing a dynamic Jahn-Teller (JT) effect in the excited Eg5 state, including the JT energy EJT1300 cm1 and tunneling splitting 3Γ=14 cm1. These results provide a successful test of the vibronic model for an E-state JT ion.
