Abstract
The state of determination of the two emergent carpel primordia of Nicotiana tabacum was tested. Carpel rudiments were excised and cultured singly or in pairs. The basal medium was that of Linsmaier and Skoog, supplemented with 1.0 mg 1−1 kinetin. Over the ensuing 4 week period, whole differentiated pistils formed from the pairs and half pistils grew from the single carpels. It is concluded that these emergent organs show a certain degree of autonomy and that they may have been determined at the time of isolation.
