Abstract
The dislocation movements associated with microcrack growth in ascleaved single crystals of magnesium oxide have been revealed by recording the associated birefringence changes in ciné-film and by post-fracture examination. The observations suggest a mechanism by which cracks well below the critical Griffith size may grow; the mechanism is not exclusive however and the conditions under which other mechanisms may operate are discussed. Keywords
